Consent is non-negotiable.
When someone takes away your agency, it becomes a story told far too often. Unfortunately, many women — and many ravers in general — have experienced harassment or assault in spaces that are supposed to feel safe and freeing.
As a woman in the rave community, I've had my fair share of uncomfortable moments. And while I'm grateful to still be here enjoying the music and the culture, those experiences are exactly why conversations like this matter.

Because consent isn't just a rule in rave culture — it's tied directly to one of our core values: Respect.
What Is PLUR?

If you're new to the scene, you've probably heard the phrase PLUR. It's sometimes debated in the scene, but the core fundamentals are still important.
PLUR stands for Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. The phrase became widely popularized in the rave community by DJ Frankie Bones in the early 1990s.
PLUR represents the foundation of rave culture:
Peace – creating a safe environment for everyone
Love – supporting and uplifting the community
Unity – embracing people of all backgrounds
Respect – honoring boundaries, space, and consent
And that last one — Respect — is where consent lives.
What Is Consent?
The Oxford definition of consent is simple:
"Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something."
But in the rave community, consent shows up in everyday moments.
Consent can mean:
- Asking before hugging someone
- Asking before giving kandi
- Asking before touching someone's outfit or hair
- Asking before taking photos or videos
- Respecting a "no" immediately and without question
And here's the key part:
Consent should be enthusiastic, clear, and ongoing.
Just because someone smiled, danced with you, or talked to you does not mean they've agreed to anything beyond that moment.
